On October 19, the State Chamber along with the Delaware Public Policy Institute and The News Journal hosted a debate for John Carney and Glen Urquhart who are both running for US Congress for Delaware. The debate was centered on education and the econonomy featuring Rich Heffron of DSCC, Nichole Dobo and Johnathan Starkey of The News Journal as questioners.
Both men took some controversial positions on ways to strengthen education in the U.S. They agreed, for example, that teacher evaluations should be tied to their students’ academic progress, and they agreed that teacher ratings might be something parents should be able to see. Delaware now is developing a system that would tie student test scores to teacher ratings. – Beth Miller, The News Journal
